In February 2020 a heavy winter storm hit the southern archipelago of Finland and prevailed for five days. We had planned a field trip to Jurmo island for the same time, but had to adjust our plans just two days before our planned departure. Host of our cabin, who is one of the only inhabitants on the island - only he and his family lives there - contacted us and told that we should consider postponing our trip or depart one day earlier, because the last ferry before the storm would depart the day before our scheduled departure. Rest of the time the ferry was to be cancelled because of the severe weather.

We took our chance and hurried to the last ferry. Arriving to Jurmo at night we saw the vast, dark nightsky above us, it was so dark in the outer archipelago that it was possible to observe the Milky Way with our own eyes. It was a calm and cold night as we walked the two kilometers from the harbor to our cabin, listening to the sound of the last ferry slowly disappearing towards Utö. We settled to the cabin and after we had prepared a warm meal, set our field equipment ready for the next day. Then we went to sleep waiting for the weather to change.

The following morning we woke up to a totally different weather. Gusts of wind that had traveled over the Baltic Sea hit the walls of our cabin. We were surrounded by the sound of the violent sea and rapidly moving air. The cabin was shaking a bit, but it was well built and sheltered us in its warm comfort.

It was a beginning of our five days isolation, recording audio and video material for an avudiovisual album which was released over two years later on Flaming Pines label. We collected material during the days, post-processed and composed during the nights. In the meanwhile we recieved news about the pandemic which had reached Finland and the world was beginning to close the borders. The feeling of isolation was tactil.

Jurmo has a long and dark history, also partially unknown in our times. Once it served as a nest for pirates, using bonfires as false beacon lights to attract trade ships to the reefs. Then burned down by the order of king Gustav I of Sweden. One can also find ancient rock formations called "Jatulintarha" there, which translate to "Giant's garden". The significance of these formations are unknown, one theory suggests they have been used in sacred rituals.
